NE Valley and Mountains

July 16-17

We visited four state parks on this ride - Roan Mountain, Sycamore Shoals, Warriors Path, and Davy Crockett birth plance. In addition, while in Greeneville, we visited Andrew Johnson's homeplace (NPS)where he lived as a young tailor.
In many ways, this was one of the most scenic State Parks rides to date. Showers were around but good fortunate was on our side and we rode only about about 15 minutes in the rain the entire trip. We covered 435 miles, which was about 60 miles more than we planned. We diverted quite a bit in places and at one point took a gravel road for about 2-3 miles right after a heavy downpour had hit the area. We spent the night in Johnson City. We've visited all ET state parks now except for one - Hiawassee, which we hope to pick up some afternoon since it's so close. Next is the northern plateau.
36 parks to go.

Day 1

July 16th

A great ride on back roads across the spine of the Appalachian Mountains. We crossed in and out of NC three times during the ride up to Roan Mountain. It was cloudy and cool with a brief shower once we got to Roan Mountain but the rest of the day was clear.

Day 2

July 17th

We started the day out in Johnson City. After visiting Davys home site and a stop in Greenville we decided to take a risk in finding a way through to Hartford Tn. via Del Rio to visit my cousin Marsha and her family. Least to say, it was an interesting ride. A huge storm moved across the area before us and we waited it out a while at a primitive church. As it turned out we missed the storm but we ended up having to ride a few miles on a gravel road (Bull mountain) that was washed out in places. We made it fine though, and had a great ride back home except fo the mess we experienced in Pigeon Forge...it was bumper to bumper crawl for about two miles!
